What Are Religious Retreats?

A religious or spiritual retreat is an intentional vacation from the hurry, scurry and worry of daily life. But a retreat is not just R&R, like a trip to Disneyland. Most often, retreats are hosted in a quiet, peaceful place: the country, the mountains or a religious compound—such as a monastery—that is removed from worldly distractions. Typically, there is no TV or newspaper, and even phone access is sometimes limited or discouraged.

Quiet reflection

Spiritual retreats are a time of quiet reflection, study, looking inward, meditation and prayer. Often, interacting with nature through exploration of the countryside helps bring the seeker back into connection with the divine. Some retreats even observe silence in order to minimize distraction.

Organized participation

There are sometimes guided programs to address particular aspects of the spiritual journey. Some retreats focus on couples, helping them to renew their commitment to each other and to their faith. Other retreats organize healing quests for those who have lost their way through illness or addiction. Animated discussions, group worship sessions, lectures or reading aloud from sacred texts are possible retreat activities. Ceremonies or rituals may help to open the seeker to deeper spiritual experiences.

Retreats for all

Retreats are common among many different spiritual groups. Christians often go on individual or group retreats. Buddhists, Hindus and Sufis all participate in forms of spiritual retreat. Even those who have no particular religious affiliation benefit from retreats where they can get back in touch with their inner divine and gain clarity about their life path and important decisions.

Whatever one’s spiritual path, a religious retreat can help one to restore focus and dedication to a higher standard of behavior and draw closer to God and faith.
